Laser Engraving Coming to Interprint USA

Interprint USA announced the purchase of a Direct Laser System.
Upon installation, the American subsidiary of the Interprint group will be able to laser-engrave rotogravure printing cylinders at its new manufacturing facility in Pittsfield.

The investment solidifies Interprint’s leadership in the decorative paper printing market as the first group to deploy this state-of-the-art technology globally. In 2006, Interprint of Arnsberg, Germany became the first decorative paper printer worldwide to bring laser engraving in-house.

The system generates a laser beam that reproduces complex designs and patterns on a cylinder’s surface with a greater fidelity than possible using mechanical technologies. “This capability will allow us to propel our product into the future,” said Interprint USA Managing Director William M. Hines, Jr. “The bottom line is a laser-engraved cylinder can print a much wider tonal range, yielding greater dimensionality and realism, sharper contrasts and smoother gradients,” said Hines. “The Direct Laser System will allow our designers to experiment and push the envelope of their creativity.”

Interprint USA Managing Director Jens Bauer added, “By bringing a Laser Engraving System in-house we also will afford ourselves many efficiencies, including the ability to precisely re-engrave a design years into the future. We’re simultaneously improving the quality of our product while reducing the time it takes to bring it to market.”

To accommodate this new equipment, Interprint will break ground on the first expansion to their new Pittsfield manufacturing facility early this year. The 18,000 square foot addition will also provide much-needed storage space. “We moved in less than two years ago and we’ve already reached maximum capacity, therefore this new construction is also necessary to support our continued growth,” said Bauer.

Despite a difficult housing market in the USA, Interprint has enjoyed dramatic growth by employing an aggressive investment strategy. Bauer remarked: “While others may pull back in tough times, Interprint is well-positioned to further increase its market share by expanding its capabilities and capacities.” Hines added: “The last quarter’s record-breaking orders offer indisputable proof that we’re making the right decisions to support our mission of being recognized as the company that makes the most significant contribution to our customers’ success.”
