Interprint Wins 2007 Interzum Design Award
The laser-engraved ‘Soft Wear’ décor from Interprint received the ‘Interzum Award: Intelligent Material & Design 2007’; Recognized for high product quality by international jury
Interprint has won the ‘Interzum Award: Intelligent Material & Design 2007’. The laser-engraved ‘Soft Wear’ décor received the award, particularly because the international jury acknowledged its high product quality. The award will be presented in Cologne on 8 May 2007 by the Cologne Trade Fair Organisers and Red Dot as part of the ‘Interzum 2007’ event. The award-winning ‘Soft Wear’ décor can be seen during the trade fair in a special exhibition and at the Interprint stand. The design competition was specifically developed for the furniture supply industry and awards prizes to products that exhibit good design, extraordinary materials and state-of-the-art functionality.
“The Interzum Award is a confirmation of our décor printing proficiency”, said Holger Dzeia, Sales & Marketing Director at Interprint. “The fact that Soft Wear, a laser-engraved décor, received the award also reflects the potential of this new in-house technology.” Interprint, the world’s first décor printer to employ the technology, has been laser engraving printing cylinders since January 2006. Precise printing reproduction of both strong contrasts and finely nuanced colour gradations in the décor image are two of its major advantages.
Designed by Interprint in cooperation with Resopal, ‘Soft Wear’ is an absolutely stepless colour gradation ranging from virtually no colour tint to a nearly full tone. Laser engraving enables the reproduction of this effect at a very high quality. Designer Gerd Ohlhauser stated: “With the one-colour printing method used for this décor, a conventional engraving process would have soon shown its technical limitations by producing a stripy result. Laser engraving, however, allows a visually convincing presentation of Soft Wear’s modern dematerialised image aesthetic.”
Another benefit of laser engraving confirmed by ‘Soft Wear’ is the smooth intersection of two counter-directional colour gradations. Light, shadow and movement generate a pure area effect without any material association becoming visible at their line of contact. This effect is enhanced by the repeat-related crossing line of contact. Gerd Ohlhauser: “Soft Wear is derived from the term ‘software’; the same principle of electronic precision that computer software achieves for digital design development carries over to the technical precision of laser engraving in printing. Laser engraving is the only technology that is able to implement the non-material character of Soft Wear for us.“
The ‘Interzum Award: Intelligent Material & Design’ will be presented to Interprint at the ‘Interzum’ trade fair in Cologne on 8 May 2007. The ‘Soft Wear’ décor, together with other award-winning products, will then be presented to the public in a special exhibition at the fair. The décor will also be shown at Interprint’s exhibition stand (C-030 in hall 6) alongside other décors produced using the printer’s revolutionary laser engraving technology.
