World Traveller in Décor Printing
Retirement Farewell of Longstanding Interprint Managing Director Klaus-Dieter Mayer

He put Interprint on the international success track and was decisively responsible for the expansion of the Interprint Group. On 26 May 2008, Klaus-Dieter Mayer reached 65 years of age and three days later he was given a retirement farewell at Delecke House on Möhne Lake in Germany.

Klaus-Dieter Mayer was the managing director for Interprint from 1990 to 2006, and its advisor since 2007. He began his career with a printer apprenticeship, which was followed by many years of employment at the décor printing company, Masa-Decor, where he was also the production manager. This extensive practical experience later guided his future business decisions just as much as his market knowledge and farsightedness. Klaus-Dieter Mayer especially distinguished himself by his courage to break new ground and extend the limits when he became a ‘world traveller in décor printing’ soon after he took up the Interprint management post in 1990.

In 1995, Klaus-Dieter Mayer established a sales office in Malaysia, which started production a year later. In 1996, a subsidiary was opened in Pesaro, Italy, which was relocated to Affi on Lake Garda and expanded to a modern Service Centre with its own sample production in 2000. In 2001, the agile businessman was made a freeman of the city of Ozorków, Poland because of his entrepreneurial commitment. In 1999, Interprint was the first foreign company to establish a newly built production facility in the Polish city and thus contributed to its economic upturn.

Klaus-Dieter Mayer helped the company to establish other locations on the world map by setting up a sales office in Shanghai in 2000 and by founding the production company, Interprint (China) Decorative Materials, in Changzhou in 2003. In 2006, he opened the newly-built production facility in the USA. And last but not least, he helped to expand Russia. Interprint has had a sales office in Moscow since 1990 and Klaus-Dieter Mayer has always had a special affinity to Russia. He naturally insisted on breaking the first ground for the new Interprint production facility in Egorievsk in 2006. The expansion and commissioning of the Russian location are the crowning glory of Klaus-Dieter Mayer’s impressive career. The first roll of décor paper was printed in April and the official opening will take place this year.

Despite Klaus-Dieter Mayer’s international activities, the expansion of the headquarters in Arnsberg was not ignored. More than 200 new jobs were created in Arnsberg alone during his period of tenure as MD of Interprint. The new Engraving and Design Centre, which opened in 2006, was also established under his management.

Business partners, shareholders and employees have a high regard for Klaus-Dieter Mayer because of his practical knowledge and experience. It is mainly because of him that Interprint is today one of the worldwide leading décor printing companies. Thomas Wrede, Managing Director of Wrede Industrieholding and shareholder of Interprint, summed up Karl-Dieter Mayer’s performance in his speech in Delecke, “When you joined in 1990, Interprint had 160 employees and six printing presses at two locations. Today, the Group has 816 employees worldwide and 24 presses at six locations. Those are impressive figures that speak for themselves.“

The shareholders and the employees of Interprint thanked Klaus-Dieter Mayer for his untiring commitment and the successful expansion of Interprint.

It goes without saying that the retirement is well-deserved. However, it will not be very inactive. The passionate walker plans to spend the near future in the Dolomites and not in a wing chair. Klaus-Dieter is also an Italophile as far as culture is concerned. A visit to the opera house in Verona is one of his greatest pleasures, and now he finally has more leisure time for this enjoyment.
