Creativity without Boundaries
‘International Design Meeting’ at Interprint’s Headquarters in Germany

Interprint employees who contribute to décor development worldwide attended the ‘International Design Meeting’ in Arnsberg in November. From Europe, America and Asia, the creative teams came to the Interprint Design Centre to exchange new ideas for décor development with their colleagues in Germany. ‘Fast Forward’ – the theme of the design meeting - was both the objective and the content: think forward with creativity and be the first to market.

For Salvatore Figliuzzi, Manager of the Repro and Décor Development department at Interprint Germany, this meeting had a special objective: “My main objective was and is, to make my colleagues even more sensitive to design inspiration. Structures and resources for new décors surround us everywhere daily. One does not have to have studied design to discover them. We only need to be attentive with open eyes in our daily life. In other words, anyone can come up with creative décor development ideas.”

To this end, the participants were given some homework beforehand: the discovery of new structures in their environment (in the form of a photo study themed, ‘Go Closer!’), the visualisation of décor worlds of the future, the depiction of influences from other areas of life in their country – like architecture, fashion, lifestyle – and the presentation of décor worlds as they could look for young adults.

For the last item, the participants got some direct input: pupils taking art as a special subject at a local grammar school had given thought to how they would like their home to look. They made an impressive presentation at the meeting: furniture with variable, replaceable fronts and different technical solutions. Salvatore Figliuzzi: “It was absolutely exciting to watch how differently the participants tackled their tasks. Their solutions were very ‘colourful’.”

A highlight of the design meeting was a visit to the MARTa museum in Herford and a round of talks with its director, Jan Hoet. The topic was ‘Art and decor: going beyond the boundaries’. The famous exhibition curator and art consultant made clear that art increasingly displaces its boundaries and increasingly opens up to non-art disciplines. Accordingly, he sees the MARTa as being a forum for creative works that investigates the complex relationship between art, design, architecture and industry. Salvatore Figliuzzi sees parallels: “In décor development, we must be receptive to inspiration from all areas of life. The objective is to break through boundaries and redefine them.”
